This track goes out specially to the Kanak activists of new Caledonia and their continuing struggle for independence against often brutal French occupation. We remember those Kanaks massacred by the French at the caves of Ouvea in New Caledonia.

Here are the complete lyrics for this piece

THROUGH THE EYES OF ONE WHO PAINTS WITH EARTH
A LOT OF THE TIME I WAS IN THE PACIFIC THE PEOPLE CARRIED ME
THE PEOPLE ACCEPT ME WHEN I STAY WITH THEM IN THE VILLAGE BECUZ
I NEVER TRY TO CHANGE THEM
THEY LEAVE ME IN PEACE

THEY SAY THEY GOES THE ONE WHO PAINTS WITH THE EARTH

PRAIZING NATURE WITH HIS WORK
WHEN I LIVED IN THE VILLAGE IN VANUATU I SAW THE PEOPLE MADE NO GARBAGE

EVERYTHING WENT BACK INTO THE EARTH
WHEN YOU ARE TRAVELLING IN A CAR

BOUNCING UP AND DOWN ON THE ROADS

YOU SEE THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE WATCHING YOU FROM
THE FOREST WITH NOTHING EXCEPT THEIR SPEARS

AND YOU FEEL SO SMALL
BECUZ THEY ARE LOOKING AT YOU LIKE YOU ARE SO HELPLESS
BECAUSE YOU NEED THAT VEHICLE TO GET AROUND

THEY HAVE EVERYTHING

THEY HAVE THEIR GARDENS THEY ARE SELF SUFFICIENT
WHAT DOES MONEY MEAN TO THEM

NOTHING

THEY DON’T NEED ANYTHING FROM YOU

IF ANYTHING YOU NEED THEM

IN VANUATU THE TRADITIONAL CUSTOM LAW IS VERY STRONG

IT GIVES THE PEOPLE A STRENGTH AND PROTECTION
THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHERE THEY ARE FROM
THEY BELIEVE THEY CAME FROM THE STONE

THEY CALL THEMSELVES PEOPLE OF THE STONE

THAT THEY ARE FROM THE STONE AGE

IN CONTRAST
IN PLACES LIKE TAHITI

FRENCH COLONIALISM HAS DESTROYED THE TRADITIONS OF THE PEOPLE
IN VANUATU THE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE VERY REBELLIOUS AND THEY
STILL HAVE THE ABILITY TO SEE YOU

TO SEE YOUR SPIRIT TO FEEL YOUR TRUE INTENTION
